An Excuse To Write
September 22, 2011 by adamvazquez
I want to write.
The lack of inspiration or necessity to write has begun to drive me crazy. So, although I could not carve out a specific reason in my mind to write – here we are. But, the process of trying to decide on a theme to write about caused me to wonder what motivates other individuals to write? What serves as the instigator to some of the authors of books, articles, blogs, or even tweets that I enjoy reading?

My list is fairly simple:
- Weather
- Coffee
- Pressure (personally or corporately)
- Good writing music (NeedToBreathe, Jack Johnson, Coldplay, Mumford & Sons, Josh Garrells, etc.)
- Reading other authors who are more talented than I am.
The weather patterns that inspire my writing can be and are quite diverse. Some days it may take a cold rainy day to provide stimulation (like today), while others necessitate a bright sunny afternoon.
Coffee is nearly always a must. Especially well made or rare coffees. For instance, last week I enjoyed a cup of Starbucks Kona coffee with a friend and barista at my local Starbucks. Will Parker provided me with a tasty blend that stirred the senses and left me with a craving to create.
Pressure has always served as one of my prime motivators to write. Perhaps this evolved out of meeting deadlines and assignments in college. One of my professors often said, ” It’s not that I work well under
pressure, but simply that I work.” I find writing to be a relaxing and enjoyable activity that eases tension and unwinds my thoughts after a strenuous day. So, perhaps my professor is right, but I certainly do believe that I write better and with more passion when surrounded by other unrelated requirements.

There are countless musicians who inspire many people in many different ways. My most recent favorites have included Josh Garrells (as recommended by Dan Rundle), NeedToBreathe, Mumford & Sons, and Michael
Buble (Everyone relax. I listen because my girlfriend enjoys him, and I enjoy her). All of which provide an environment that both relaxes and creates an edge in my mind. That combination is expressed through writing.
Finally, the most enjoyable motivation (in my opinion). I LOVE reading other authors. Especially if I know them personally or am connected to them in some way. Of course, I enjoy the nationally syndicated authors found in the Wall Street Journal, Bluffington Post, NY Times, or other newspapers. Additionally, I am an avid reader of novels and stories. However, my most frequented source for material to read and enjoy comes from the blogs and online journals of others. Some of my favorites are listed below:

I love your comment about Michael Buble. 50% of the music I listen to is enjoyed by my wife, whom I enjoy, therefore I also listen to it. Neat expression of one of life’s oddities.
Looking forward to more of your posts.
Thanks, Chris! I find myself doing lots of things these days that I didn’t necessarily do before.
Thanks for reading!
